“The President-Elect of the European Association of Percutaneous Intervention (EAPCI), a chapter of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), calls for better safeguards for cardiac patients during the pandemic.
The eyes of the world are focused on tracking the number of new cases of COVID-19 each day. But there is another health crisis currently unfolding: people suffering from heart attacks are delaying or avoiding going to hospitals for fear of contracting the coronavirus. Many patients do not call an ambulance even with chest pain, dyspnea and acute cardiac conditions. This could prove deadly.
Hospitals must establish non-COVID-19 zones (“clean zones”) where patients can be given life-saving treatments without additional risk of infection. Hospitals should promptly inform medical services and the general public on how and where to access these services.”
